UL 94 test

In a world where safety is paramount, the UL 94 test serves as a crucial benchmark for assessing the flammability of materials used in industrial equipment.

What is the UL 94 Test?

In the industrial sector, fire safety materials are essential. The UL 94 test, developed by the independent organization Underwriters Laboratories (UL), is one of the most widely used standards for evaluating the flammability of plastics employed in electrical, electronic, and industrial applications.

This test measures a plastic material’s ability to ignite, sustain flame propagation, and self-extinguish once the heat source is removed. Ensuring materials don’t exacerbate fire hazards and don’t endanger user safety is vital.

What exactly is the test for?

The UL 94 test aims to ensure that polymer materials are used in industrial products:

  • Do not melt in a hazardous manner.
  • Do not ignite easily or extinguish rapidly.
  • Maintain their mechanical and electrical properties during and after exposure to flames.

How is the Test Conducted?

Performed in controlled laboratory settings, the UL 94 test follows specific methodologies based on the sample’s orientation (vertical or horizontal) and the desired classification. The general steps include:

  1. Sample Preparation: Standardized plastic plaques are cut from the material to be tested.
  2. Flame Application: The sample is exposed to a small flame for a defined duration (typically 10 seconds), then removed.
  3. Behavior Observation: Technicians record the combustion time, note any flaming droplets, and determine if the flame self-extinguishes.
  4. Classification Assignment: Based on performance, materials receive classifications such as V-0, V-1, V-2, 5VA, 5VB, or HB.

UL 94 Classifications:

UL 94 ClassificationDescriptionKey CriteriaTest Orientation
V-0Excellent flame resistance– Flame extinguishes within ≤10 seconds – No flaming dropletsVertical
V-1Good flame resistance– Flame extinguishes within ≤30 seconds – No flaming dropletsVertical
V-2Moderate flame resistance– Flame extinguishes within ≤30 seconds – Flaming droplets allowedVertical
5VAExcellent resistance, no drilling– Flame extinguishes rapidly – No holes formed in the sampleVertical (more stringent)
5VBGood flame resistance with possible hole formation– Flame extinguishes rapidly – Holes may form in the sampleVertical (more stringent)
HBMinimum acceptable flame resistance– Limited burning rate – Flame does not spread rapidlyHorizontal
